Scans best when printed at least 25 mm tall with plenty of quiet zone.

What is a barcode?

A barcode is a machine-readable pattern of parallel lines that encodes text or numbers. Scanners read the widths and spacing of the bars to decode the underlying value in a fraction of a second — powering checkout, inventory, shipping, and asset tracking around the world.

Different formats exist for different jobs. Retail products use EAN-13 (Europe/global) or UPC-A (North America). Warehouses, logistics, and internal tracking usually use Code 128 or Code 39 because they can encode letters as well as digits.

Benefits of barcodes

  • Faster workflows. A scan is dramatically faster and more accurate than typing an SKU by hand.
  • Fewer errors. Built-in check digits catch mis-scans before they reach your database.
  • Universal. The same barcode can be read at a point-of-sale terminal, a warehouse scanner, or a phone camera.
  • Cheap to produce. Print them on labels, packaging, invoices, or shelf tags with a regular printer.

How to scan a barcode

  1. Open a barcode scanner app or the built-in camera on modern iPhone and Android devices.
  2. Point the camera at the barcode from 10–20 cm away — keep the whole code inside the frame.
  3. Hold steady until the phone highlights the code and shows the value.
  4. For retail scanners, ensure the printed barcode has strong contrast and a clear margin of at least 10× the bar width on each side.

  4. 4

Download as PNG or SVG, copy the image, or print directly.
